Here are some of the most famous black South African artists

Looking for the best South African art painting? Before you proceed, it is necessary to have the full-fledged knowledge of leading black South African artists who have carved a niche in the field of art. So, let’s get to know more about them below.

William Kentridge

The most famous modern artist from South Africa is a global celebrity. His work has been shown at major institutions such as the MOMA in New York and the Louvre in Paris, and he has directed opera productions for the New York Met. Kentridge can be found at the Centre For The Less Good Idea, a collaborative arts venue he created in the Maboneng Precinct in early 2017, when he is not collaborating on significant international projects or exhibiting abroad.

Robert Hodgins

Due to his late flowering career and lengthy life, Robert Hodgins is frequently referred to as a contemporary artist (Hodgins died in 2010 aged 89). After retiring from a career in journalism and education, Hodgins began to have a substantial influence on the South African art world in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Hodgins' late career paintings are now immensely popular among collectors, with some selling for more than R1 000 000 at auction. He is known for his scathing studies of prominent individuals in suits or military fatigues.

Kudzanai Chiurai

In his thought-provoking and theatrically framed montages, Zimbabwe-born photographer, artist, activist, and cultural philosopher Kudzanai Chiurai grapples with the intricacies of colonialism and its impact on current African states. Chiurai studied fine art at the University of Pretoria, and although living in South Africa for most of his career, his work and personal activity is still very much focused on contemporary Zimbabwe.

Ayanda Mabulu

Without a doubt, Mabulu is one of South Africa's most divisive painters, and not a year goes by without one of his most explicit and outspoken political South African art paintings sparking passionate debates over censorship and artistic expression. Mabulu's more notorious paintings have landed him in hot water for showing numerous members of the South African political elite (both living and deceased) in sexually explicit poses. Mabulu's work isn't just X-rated; the artist also creates softer, more nuanced collages that allude to the inequalities and hypocrisies that exist in South African society.

Wayne Barker

Being one of the notedblack south african artists,Barker is noted for his anarchic approach to the politics of ordinary South African life and popular culture, and is often referred to as the wild child of the local art scene. Barker has established himself as one of South Africa's most prolific iconoclasts, rearranging iconic motifs in his paintings with vibrant colour, collage, neon, and odd objects.

However, there are several more artists to look at. In our next post, we will feature those as well.
